The Call to Ministry

MinistryReverend Sylvia M. Ball, Pastor of Sweet Union Baptist Church, Roanoke, Virginia. Pastor Ball is honored to serve as the first female pastor of the historic Sweet Union Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia. She is sought after as a preacher, teacher and revivalist.


A Native of Washington, D.C., she has been motivating people through the Word of God for over 25 years.  Under her leadership, Sweet Union is experiencing growth and birthing new ministries that edify children, youth and adults in the church as well as the community.

Pastor Sylvia is an honor graduate of Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia where she  received her Master of Divinity in 2009 (Magna Cum Laude). Her affiliations, roles and accomplishments include:

  • Virginia Baptist State Convention – Vice President, Western Region
  • The Valley Baptist Association of Virginia – Executive Board and Instructor
  • The Baptist General Convention of Virginia–Co-Commissioner-Finance
  • Missionary District Bible School Convention – Board Member
  • Clergy United Reclaiming Ecclesia (CURE) – Member
  • Family Service of Roanoke Valley – Board Member
  • Mental Health Roanoke Valley – Board Member
  • Roanoke City Public Schools – Volunteer
  • Recipient of the Black Girls Rock Award
  • Recipient of the NAACP Citizen of the Year Award for Religion
  • Recipient of the Pastor of the Year Award  – Virginia State Convention

Pastor Sylvia’s desire, as a minister and disciple of Christ, is to lead people to a saving relationship with Christ, see them grow, and become multiplying disciples. She is encouraged by the words of the Apostle Paul as recorded in 1st Timothy 1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, appointing me into the ministry.

Pastor Sylvia is married to Deacon William Rickey Ball. They have one daughter, a son-in-love, and three grandchildren.
